INCREDIBLE images and video footage have captured the moment a GoPro burst into flames after being hit by molten lava but somehow survived.

The stunning footage shows the red-hot lava slowly moving towards the GoPro before setting the device on fire as soon as it reaches it. The screen then goes dark before a man is seen through the damaged lens.

Striking shots show the aftermath of the incident with the GoPro’s exterior nearly completely melted but the camera lens looks undamaged.

The footage and pictures were taken by Erik Storm, the owner and lead guide of Kilauea EcoGuides in Hawaii, after he placed his GoPro in a crack to film the lava flows.

“I was telling a story when the molten lava completely engulfed my GoPro (with housing on) and it caught on fire,” He said.

“I used a geology rock hammer to pull it out of the lava and thought it was a total loss.”

When Erik got back home he hammered the cooled rock off the GoPro housing and noticed the Wi-Fi light on the camera was still blinking.

After pulling the SD card from the device he found the footage intact with the last video showing the moment the lava struck and the GoPro burst into flames.

“The camera even still worked although not as well as it did before,” Erik added

“Truly amazing it survived.”
